UK Based Qanun Player
Serdar Yılmaz (b. 1975, Adana, Turkey) is a kanun player and physicist (PhD, Assoc.Prof.). He began his musical education in Adana. He worked at Mersin University, Physics Department between 2010 and 2022. During his academic career, he managed the Mersin State Conservatory and lectured the Physics of Music, published several papers and proceedings to promote awareness of this interdisciplinary field. Between 2019 and 2021, he worked as an academic visiting researcher at the University of Surrey, UK.
As a performer, Serdar blends traditional Turkish and modern styles, with a deep focus on the classical maqam tradition, its theory, and history. He has appeared in numerous Ottoman and Turkish music concerts and collaborated with the fusion jazz group Kalpadruma in leading UK jazz venues. He also contributed to the album Alla Turca with Hülya Kazan (soprano) and Prof.Dr.Seyit Yöre (oud).
Now based in the UK, he continues to perform Maqam and Ethno Jazz with an innovative pursuit of new tones while embracing the stylistic approach of the classical tradition.
